Antivirus?

Support, bragging, questions, overclocking, faq, software, programming, electrical stuff... You get the gist.

some time ago i used to use avast antivirus as my protection against the evils of the internet, which went fairly well until i discovered that the program that was supposed to prevent hinderances to my machine was in fact causing one; my mouse would intermittantly freeze up (at least that what i recall the issue as,it was a major inconvenience, it was some time ago) this was a problem reported by others on the internet... so i got rid of it and 'rode the internet bareback' if you will.

dad started getting paranoid after a period of time that perhaps all the mysterious loss of our internet cap was due to hackers/viruses using up the net, and so he insisted i get an antivirus if i was to use his internet...

so i started a trial of norton gaming edition yesterday, and ever since -my computer ran slower, there seemed to be like twice as many svchost processes and both in and out of games the keyboard and mouse froze up. so i got rid of it.

im getting avast again right now (its new version) as it apparently has a gaming/silent mode (which just silences the notifications) doubt thatd help the performance/other issues i had with it in the past, so what im wondering is, have any other gamers here had a great success with an antivirus that is friendly with games? (and i mean a broad range, not just steam)

I hear the best internet antivirus is a firewall.

If you go out to bbq and get gas bottle. Let out some gas.
Light match.
Wait until their is stead flame and apply to ethernet cable.

I have used MSE, NOD32, and Sophos so far on my computer with no issues. Currently running MSE because it's free and unobtrusive.

I use AVG and don't have issues with gaming... none that I can confirm anyway. I have a sneaking suspicion that it causes my TF2 to window out to Windows even when I have it in a bordered window. Another PC in my house runs Zone Alarm but that is a bitch if you dont have it set up right and if you forget to go into game mode.

That's because... YOU ARE the problem ;)

The best across the board of current releases in terms of performance, detection rate and the quality of their heuristics are Avira, F-Secure, Kapersky and NOD32.

I would recommend NOD32.

this surprised me. i mean i have the same attitude (never had a problem) but i just assumed as an IT admin youd be nuts about security.

as for nod32.... sounds really good if it werent for the having to pay part ;p
maybe ill see how i go without anything again...
i did get an installer for the new avast (and ccleaner) but am expecting the same issues...

thanks anyways (Y)

NOD32 is pretty cost effective if you buy it. Of course, if you have no trouble with viruses or malware, then any cost is an added extra. Maybe try the free version of Avira.

However the free version is a little naggy. You can quiet it down with some tweaks.

Otherwise, just turn to evil.

the best security is not being connected to the internet at all :)

but more seriously, just watch what you're going to. i run a script blocker on firefox which also helps and im not one to dl dodgey torrents or files
